Greenroom Academy offers a flexible, supportive educational setting for children ages 11-18 years who struggle in mainstream schools due to factors such as mental ill health, special educational needs, school avoidance, or social challenges like bullying. It provides smaller group or 1:1 teaching, personalised learning, and a calmer environment to help students re-engage with education, rebuild confidence, and work towards qualifications in the core subjects English and Maths. We can also support reintegration into mainstream education, through short-term interventions designed to restore self-belief and consolidate academic progress through a personalised learning plan.
We know that more and more children and young people are struggling with anxiety disorders than ever before. In fact, the Children's Commissioner Report (2026) found that in 2024-25, anxiety was the top known reason for referral to Mental Health Services. Our teachers adopt a trauma-informed approach to learning, which seeks to prioritise safe and secure relationships, routines and boundaries before anything else. We work on grounding techniques, emotional regulation and stabilisation methods in order to allow learners to regain their sense of empowerment and make confident choices, both in their learning pathways and in their wider life.
For many adolescents, depression does not present itself as simply 'feeling sad'. Instead, in can cause irritability, anger, physical pain or a withdrawal from the activities and relationships that once brought the young person joy. In some cases, people with depression can become detached from social life and lack any motivation, causing the depressed state to spiral. At Greenroom Academy, we strive to incorporate routine back into young people's lives, to provide them with the structure and stability they need in order to manage daily life. Part of that routine is centred around outdoor learning, as extensive research has proven that time spent engaging with nature generates 'a multitude of positive emotions such as calmness, joy, creativity and can facilitate concentration' (Mental Health Foundation,h ttps://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/sites/default/files/2022-06/MHAW21-Nature-research-report.pdf, p.5).
We can also support learners who have been, or are going to be, home-schooled, if they are looking to supplement the education they will be receiving at home. Our qualified teachers can offer English and Maths tuition at a ration of 1:1 or 1:2, based on their needs, at a level that is suitable for their ability (Functional Skills, GCSE, Step Up, A Level for English).
We know that for many home-schooled learners, venturing out of the home, meeting new adults or peers, or testing out a new setting, may be something that is daunting or uncomfortable. However, our nurturing, rural environment, small and consistent team of staff and personalised learning plans enable learners to quickly build trust and confidence, establish new relationships and succeed at their own pace.
The above list is not exhaustive - our inclusive and welcoming environment is suitable for any student who is unable to cope in the traditional educational setting. Sometimes a student may suffer from a range of mental health conditions, and we will always aim to cater to the needs of individuals on a case-by-case basis. Our free trial session means that any learner is welcome to visit our setting and meet our team without any obligation or expectation, so that they can feel confident that Greenroom Academy is the right fit for them.
