With a degree in Law, Richard has worked across a range of secondary schools in Northamptonshire, specialising in GCSE Business and Maths, and has built a wealth of classroom experience. Richard is a sought-after teacher, valued by students for his engaging teaching style, his ability to explain complex ideas clearly, and his approachable, down-to-earth manner.
Richard is particularly skilled at building strong, positive relationships with students. His good sense of humour and seemingly endless patience help create an environment where learners feel safe to try, make mistakes, and grow. He firmly believes that success is not about getting things right the first time, but about finding your own path to the answer—an approach that encourages resilience, independence, and confidence.
An equally special part of the Greenroom Academy environment is Pip, our reading ambassador dog, who is trained to the The Kennel Club Gold Good Citizen Award standard. Pip provides a calm, friendly, and completely non-judgemental presence, making her the perfect companion for students who may feel anxious or lack confidence in their reading. Sitting with Pip allows young people to read aloud without fear of criticism, helping to build fluency, self-assurance, and a more positive relationship with literacy. Research has shown that the presence of a well-trained dog in a learning environment can reduce stress, lower anxiety, and improve engagement, particularly for students who may struggle in more traditional settings.
Beyond reading, Pip also plays an important role in social and emotional development. During breaks, students can interact with her by throwing a ball, practising simple commands such as “spin” or “high five,” and learning how to communicate clearly and calmly. These interactions help develop responsibility, patience, and empathy, while also boosting confidence as students experience success in guiding and working with her. Pip brings warmth, connection, and joy to the day, supporting a nurturing atmosphere where students feel safe, valued, and more willing to take positive steps in both their learning and personal growth. Reading aloud for just 6 minutes a day can reduce stress levels by up to 60% making it more effective than listening to music or going for a walk!
