Alternative provision offers a flexible, supportive educational setting for children who struggle in mainstream schools due to factors such as mental health difficulties, special educational needs, school avoidance, or social challenges like bullying. It provides smaller group or 1:1 teaching, personalised learning, and a calmer environment to help students re-engage with education, rebuild confidence, and work towards qualifications in core subjects like English and Maths. Often used as a short-term intervention, it supports reintegration into mainstream education or progression into further education, employment, or training.
In this approach, learning is tailored, practical, and relevant, helping students experience success at their own pace. The non-traditional, rural environment provided by Greenroom Academy enhances this support by incorporating hands-on, physical activity and nature into the learning journey, which reduces stress, improves focus, and encourages wellbeing. This holistic approach fosters emotional regulation and a renewed confidence in learning.
Our team has decades of experience in supporting students with a range of special educational needs. All of our academic team are qualified teachers, who have extensive training in supporting dyslexia, autism, difficulties processing and many other challenges to learning.
So many young people are currently facing emotional and mental health challenges that can prevent them from accessing mainstream education and create barriers to their success. Our nurturing, supportive and empathetic staff can gently build the resilience and confidence of learners, step by step, on a path to greater self-esteem.
We can also support learners who want to make a return to the mainstream classroom. Sometimes an illness, physical or mental, or other traumatic life event can put a temporary pause on their enthusiasm for attending school. We can act as a midway point between the home and mainstream school, reintegrating learners in a combined approach of alternative provision and traditional schooling.
